I was happy to see this ruling. I found the DC gun ban law to be ridiculous. You can argue the effectiveness of such a law in actually reducing gun violence (I happen to believe it doesn’t), but in my opinion you can’t argue it’s constitutional.
I’m no fan of guns, and would never have one in my home, but I don’t believe the government should be able to tell me that I can’t. This was a day of victory for individual rights.
I should also add that I appreciated the limited scope of the majority opinion, and it’s explicit mention that this ruling does not in anyway delegitimize such laws that ban gun ownership by felons, the mentally retarded, etc, or laws banning assault weapons. There is room for sensible gun control laws without stripping the constitutional right to bear arms.
